Support Worker roles in Wigan

Support Worker roles in Wigan cover a lot of ground: supported living, mental health services, learning disability support and community teams. Protocol Healthcare Services places people on agency shifts and in permanent posts across all of it.

Working around Wigan

Royal Albert Edward Infirmary is the hospital local teams work alongside, and the homes and services around Ince and Orrell draw staff from the same pool. Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs services locally, with Wigan Council commissioning the social care alongside them.

Most placements are in Ince, Pemberton and Orrell, with regular work further out at Aspull, Hindley and Ashton-in-Makerfield. Postings run across Greater Manchester.

A typical shift

  • Supporting people with daily routines and personal care where needed
  • Encouraging independence, choice and everyday decision making
  • Supporting people to access work, education, activities and their community
  • Positive behaviour support and de-escalation, with training provided
  • Medication prompting and support appropriate to your training
  • Accurate notes and clear communication with the wider team

Shifts and contracts

Days, nights and weekends are all available, full time or part time. Someone covering Hindley on earlies and Ashton-in-Makerfield on nights is an ordinary week here. The aim is ongoing work in settings you already know, not a different address every week between Ince and Standish.

Some people stay on agency indefinitely; others use a few months around Orrell to find the right permanent home. Both are fine.

What you will need

  • Patience, resilience and respect for the people you support
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience in mental health or learning disability support is desirable, not essential
  • An enhanced DBS check, which we can arrange
  • The right to work in the UK

How we work with you

You get one consultant who knows your registration, your patch and which Greater Manchester services you have already worked in. We recruit from our offices in Edgware and Bournemouth and place people nationwide; there is no branch in Wigan itself, which we would rather say plainly.

St Helens, Bolton and Warrington are close enough that plenty of our people work across them and Wigan both.

Let us know your hours and how far you will travel from Ince, and we will do the rest. There are immediate opportunities for suitable candidates. Call 020 8951 4510 or use the contact form.
