Support Worker roles in South Shields

Support Worker roles in South Shields cover a lot of ground: supported living, mental health services, learning disability support and community teams. Protocol Healthcare Services places people on agency shifts and in permanent posts across all of it.

Working around South Shields

South Tyneside District Hospital is the hospital local teams work alongside, and the homes and services around Westoe and Harton draw staff from the same pool. Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust runs services locally, with South Tyneside Council commissioning the social care alongside them.

Most placements are in Westoe, The Lawe and Harton, with regular work further out at Cleadon Park, Whiteleas and Biddick Hall. Postings run through NE33 and NE34, including out at Tyne Dock.

A typical shift

  • Supporting people with daily routines and personal care where needed
  • Encouraging independence, choice and everyday decision making
  • Supporting people to access work, education, activities and their community
  • Positive behaviour support and de-escalation, with training provided
  • Medication prompting and support appropriate to your training
  • Accurate notes and clear communication with the wider team

Shifts and contracts

Days, nights and weekends are all available, full time or part time. Someone covering Whiteleas on earlies and Biddick Hall on nights is an ordinary week here. The aim is ongoing work in settings you already know, not a different address every week between Westoe and Simonside.

Some people stay on agency indefinitely; others use a few months around Harton to find the right permanent home. Both are fine.

What you will need

  • An enhanced DBS check, which we can arrange
  • The right to work in the UK
  • Patience, resilience and respect for the people you support
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience in mental health or learning disability support is desirable, not essential

How we work with you

You get one consultant who knows your registration, your patch and which Tyne and Wear services you have already worked in. We recruit from our offices in Edgware and Bournemouth and place people nationwide; there is no branch in South Shields itself, which we would rather say plainly.

Sunderland, Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead are close enough that plenty of our people work across them and South Shields both.

Let us know your hours and how far you will travel from Westoe, and we will do the rest. There are immediate opportunities for suitable candidates. Call 020 8951 4510 or use the contact form.
