Nurse roles in Birkenhead
Protocol Healthcare Services is looking for dedicated, compassionate and professional Registered Nurses to work in and around Birkenhead. We place nurses on both agency and permanent contracts, so whether you want to pick up shifts around other commitments or move into a settled post, there is a route for you.
Where the work is in Birkenhead
Work comes up near Oxton, Prenton and Tranmere, much of it within reach of Arrowe Park Hospital. Between Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Wirral Council, most of what we staff around Rock Ferry sits under one of the two.
Shifts land right across the patch: Oxton, Prenton and Tranmere one week, Rock Ferry, Bidston and Claughton the next. If you are based around CH41 or CH42, you are inside the area we cover most heavily.
The job day to day
- ✓ Wound care, catheter care and other clinical tasks within your competence
- ✓ Working alongside GPs, district nurses and multidisciplinary teams
- ✓ Supporting and supervising care and support staff on shift
- ✓ Accurate record keeping and handover
- ✓ Assessing, planning and reviewing care for the people you look after
- ✓ Medication administration and clinical observations
When you would work
Full-time and part-time patterns both work. If Claughton is easier for you to reach than Seacombe, say so and the rota follows it. Once you are established we keep the work regular rather than sporadic, usually in the same two or three services around Seacombe.
We recruit for temporary and permanent posts. Trying several settings between Oxton and Rock Ferry first tends to make the permanent choice obvious.
Before you apply
- ✓Excellent clinical and communication skills
- ✓Experience in community, elderly or end-of-life care is desirable, but not essential
- ✓An enhanced DBS check, which we can arrange
- ✓Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- ✓The right to work in the UK
Working with Protocol
We are a two-office team, not a call centre. The person booking your Merseyside shifts knows which settings suit you. We recruit from our offices in Edgware and Bournemouth and place people nationwide; there is no branch in Birkenhead itself, which we would rather say plainly.
If you can travel, there is steady work in Liverpool, Wallasey and Bootle as well, and many people cover two of those alongside Birkenhead.
Tell us which parts of Merseyside you can reach and we will match you to what is open. There are immediate opportunities for suitable candidates. Call 020 8951 4510 or use the contact form.

You need current NMC registration and the right to work in the UK. Experience in community, elderly or end-of-life care is desirable but not essential, and we will talk through which settings around Birkenhead suit your background.
Day, night and weekend shifts, on full-time and part-time patterns. You set your availability and we work to it. Once you are established we can offer regular ongoing shifts rather than one-offs.
Both. We recruit for temporary and permanent positions, and many people start on agency shifts around Birkenhead before moving into a permanent post once they have found a service that suits them.
Across nursing homes, residential services, supported living, community teams and NHS settings. In practice that means Oxton, Prenton, Tranmere, Rock Ferry and Bidston, covering CH41, CH42 and CH43, and out into Merseyside. Arrowe Park Hospital is the main hospital in the area.
We have immediate opportunities for suitable candidates. Once your registration, right-to-work and DBS checks are in place, shifts can usually follow quickly. Call 020 8951 4510 or send us your details to get started.
